Philosophy and Theology at the Theological scholl of St Benedict Monastery in Olinda-PE, Clinical Psychoanalyst and Postgraduate in Psychoanalysis.

University of Brasilia, Psychoanalyst and Postgraduate of Clinical Psychoanalysis.

Our History

In 1985, our founder Gilberto Gomes Barbosa met the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and had personal experience through the “Baptism in the Holy Spirit”. This experience took place at the Church of St. Francis of Paula, in the neighborhood of Caxangá – Recife – PE. From there, a new process began in his life. After actively participating in 5 years of Prayer Groups of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, the desire to give himself more to the Lord arose.

Knowing the New Communities, seeing their life models, awakened the desire to start the Community “Eis aí tua mãe – Obra de Maria”, this in 1990. The inspiration was soon welcomed by Maria Salomé Ventura who immediately embraced the cause with the founder, thus becoming co-founder along with 7 other young people starting first as external community and, later such asinternal community.

We grew up with many difficulties, but gradually the Lord was confirming our vocation through the Church and those who were joining us. Came the first groups of pilgrimages and then the Lord formed one of our main missions which is the pilgrimage to holy places, as well as several activities that we carry out such as works of evangelization, Concerts, retreats, Cenacles “Here is your mother”, also called prayer groups in families and various activities of a social, educational,
cultural, artistic and sports nature.

The “Eis aí tua mãe – Obra de Maria” was configuring with the Charismatic and Marian spiritualities. Marian because we are children of Our Lady and, like John, the beloved disciple, we
receive the mission of taking her home, seeking to imitate her in serving with joy.

We live the spirituality of Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Charisms give us the impetus to missionary life and
evangelization with the power to bring people to the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Our Charism

Our charism is:

Evangelize in every way with joy. As a member of “Eis aí tua mãe – Obra de Maria” we must be at the church’s disposal in what she needs, always serving the Lord and
evangelizing in every way with joy.

As the psalmist says:

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, worship the Lord with gladness”

Salm 99

Our Identity

Charismatic Communities: What does God want from us today?
When we read At 2.42-47 and At 4.32-35, we clearly see the objective of the New Communities.

Jesus lived with the twelve disciples and life in community is the guarantee of our spiritual perseverance.

“I’m very happy when I see young people who decide on community life and gave your life, wants to give himself to the Gospel. What God wants from us today is the surrender for his Kingdom through evangelization.”

Gilberto Gomes Barbosa

Our Name

There was a Ministry of Evangelization called ” Os Pés do Mensageiro “, coordinated by Gilberto and a great friend, who is now a monk. At that time, we were part of some prayer groups: Magnificat (at the Catholic University), “Fogo Santo” (Várzea) and “Rainha da Paz”(College of Religious of Christian Instruction, known as the “Colégio das Damas”).

Thus a very participatory group was formed and with its growth, we began to realize that we needed a name. Then we gathered the whole group and concluded that the name would be “OBRA DE MARIA” because this would cover everything.

At the time the group was still very small, and some people questioned, “But ‘work’ means big thing…” Even so, the name was approved and welcomed as God’s will.

After a few years we had a new understanding and realized that the official name of the Community would be ” Eis aí tua mãe ” even though we continue to be known as the “Obra de Maria”, this name reflects what is our call: The Father wanted to give his son a Mother, made us all children of Him, brothers of Jesus and children of Mary. As children of Mary, we seek to imitate her in serving with joy.

How we Live

The Community “Eis aí tua mãe – Obra de Maria” ” has in its structure priests, deacons, consecrated, marrieds and singles. We must live all as one family, each in your state of life, sharing everything and putting everything in common, like the first Christians. Not only their material goods but also their sorrows, joys, and apostolates. Everything must be everyones! Our life must be put into common, in the same commitment to the desire to live holiness.

We seek to live chastity, poverty, and obedience based on evangelical counsels. We want to be for the world, in the form of an ecclesial community, a witness of the Christian life, evangelizing in every way with joy.

We are a Community of apostolic life, we live to make Jesus known through our evangelizing work, assuming for this several missions, both in Brazil and in other parts of the world.

The Lord has given us a very special mission, which is the Pilgrimages, where we bring thousands of pilgrims annually to the Shrines of the world, promoting through visits to the sacred places true encounters with God.

In addition to this mission, we also undertake to live a fraternal life to evangelizing in every way with joy, through the Cenacles “Here is your mother.” (true Groups of Prayer in families), retreats, Congresses (at national and international level ), concerts and also with social works in various segments.

Why a Medal

During a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, our founder was deeply touched to see the image of the ordeal and felt like John the Evangelist, the beloved disciple, as he reports in the official documents of our community:

“When I saw that image, the message that came into my heart was the text of the Gospel and I said to myself, “I have to take this to my life!”. I felt that I should take Mary to my house, which could mean my heart or the Community ” Eis aí tua mãe – Obra de Maria” for as children of Mary we must make her better known and loved.”

Gilberto Gomes Barbosa

The image reproduced Christ on the cross: “When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” (John.19, 26-27)

Back in Brazil, she shared this sentiment with Maria Salomé and the other members of the community who prayed together and confirmed this inspiration. With this feeling, they decided to reproduce the ordeal scene in a medal that reminds us of the commitment made to take Mary home.

The shirt

In our shirt we print what must be in our countenance:

“We serve the Lord with joy!” As St Paul says: Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Phil. 4,4

Our Spirituality

Marian Devotion

It was with great confidence that Our Lady said to her “YES”: “May your word to me be fulfilled.”(Lk 1:38). Our yes to the Charism must also be of equal confidence in Jesus Christ, with this yes of Our Lady as a model. The Annunciation is an extraordinary event, for it marks Mary’s presence in the history of salvation, through her unwavering faith, She becomes the wife of the Holy Spirit and “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us”

In our medal, the passage of the Gospel where Jesus delivers John to Mary as a son and surrenders Mary as Mother to John (Jn 19:25-27). Our vocation will only be firm when we take on Our Lady as a Mother!

We live the spirituality of Catholic Charismatic Renewal

St Paul, in his ministry, found that in addition to several gifts the Holy Spirit manifested himself with several charisms:

“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines”.

I Cor 12, 4-11

These charisms are those who give an impulse of missionary life to a charismatic community like ours. They are the ones who witness whether or not our community is charismatic and they are the ones who drive the evangelization of the community with power. They are the tools necessary for us to lead people to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The first goal of our evangelization.
